What Hurts The Most by flounderfish

This is based on the song "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts.
I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don't bother me.
I can take a few tears now and then and just let them out.
I'm not afraid to cry
Every once in a while
Evne though goin' on with you gone still upsets me
There are days every now and again
I pretend I'm OK
But that's not what gets me.

"You OK, Tony?" Abby said from her perch on his desk.

"Yeah Abby."

"You're thinking about something. What?"

"You don't need to know."

I can't believe I didn't tell her. Why didn't I? I was so close, so close and then she was…gone. Slipped away. And now she'll never know.

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could've been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do.

"Kate, I have something to say."

"Yes?"

"Well…"

"Come on, Tony. What?"

"Um… Well.. it's just…"

"Oh crap I'm late. Tell me later DiNozzo." Kate turned and walked away, leaving Tony standing in the same place.

It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you everywhere I go
But I'm doin' It
It's hard to force that smile when I see our old friends and I'm alone
Still Harder
Getting up, getting dressed, livin' with this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would trade give away all the words that I saved in my heart
That I left unspoken

"Protection detail's over, Kate."

"You did good."

"For once, DiNozzo's right."

"I thought I'd die bef-" CRACK! A shot rang out and Kate fell to the ground, her blood spraying on Tony and Gibbs and a bullethole in her forehead.


Good morning, Kate.- Tony
That grin can only mean one thing-Kate
And what's that?-Tony
You're in love. Again.- Kate

I didn't think you'd notice-Tony
Stealing food is okay, if you don't get caught-Kate
I prefer the term sharing-Tony
It was my lunch-Kate


What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing
What could've been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do.

The funeral was unreal to Tony. He numbly walked through and said good-bye to Kate. His Kate. After everyone had left, he walked up to her tombstone.

"Good-bye Katie." He whispered as he placed a small box on her grave. Inside it was the engagement ring he'd been planning to give her.

What hurts the most

Is what I was trying to do.
