With Sarah safely back at college and free from any charge of murder, McGee allowed himself to think back on the events that had nearly led to his little sister being arrested.
Two things stood out in his mind:
One: how disappointed, hurt even, Gibbs had been because McGee hadn't gone to him and asked for help.
He recalled the look on Gibbs's face and the tone in his voice, when he'd answered McGee's, "I know withholding evidence is a violation of NCIS policy" with, "And a crime! One that I don't really care about. Why didn’t you come to me?"
Now, unlike then, he actually said, "Sorry, boss." And he was sorry. Sorry he couldn't have taken the chance and gone to Gibbs; sorry that he'd lied to the man he respected above all others, the man who'd taken a chance and promoted him to Field Agent.
But even as he muttered the apology he knew if the same thing happened again, he'd do it all again. That was the second thing that stood out.
The cliché was true; blood was thicker than water. He and Sarah shared the same blood; hence he'd do anything to keep her safe.
