Kate, Tony and Gibbs were all seated at their desks in the squad room. Kate was typing furiously on her keyboard when she heard something hit her desk. She looked to her left and saw a paperclip. She rolled her eyes and went back to typing. Soon enough another paperclip landed on her desk this time on her keyboard. She flicked it off and kept righting. It wasn’t until one landed in her lap that she finally said something.
“ Do you always have to act like a child” she snapped looking up at Tony’s cheesy grin.
“ Some people find it adorable, Kate” he replied.
“ Well I find it damn right annoying, so stop” she told him.
“ Oh come on Kate, I’m bored as” he complained.
“ Well find something else to entertain yourself” she said as she got back to work. She thought she had stopped him but when she felt a paper ball hit her head, she knew otherwise.
“ DiNozzo” she yelled as she stood up from her chair.
“ What? You said find something else, so I did” he said with a smile.
“ Annoying me? God your so juvenile” she said and turned to face Gibbs.
“ I think we should just adopt Tony, he acts like a two year old most of the time anyway. Plus he is already toilet trained” she said with a grin. Gibbs looked over at Tony.
“ Nah, I don’t like the Italian’s” he said shaking his head. Tony was about to reply when Kate’s phone started to ring. She looked at the caller ID and saw the doctor’s number. She looked over at Gibbs.
“ It’s him” he told him.
“ Go on” he said giving her permission to take the call. Kate ran around her desk and headed for the stairs. It was always quiet behind the stairs. She took a deep breath before answering the phone.
“ Kate Todd” she answered.
“ Miss Todd, its Dr Farrell” the voice on the other end answered.
“ Hi, how did it all go?” she asked. She heard the doctor sigh and knew instantly that it wouldn’t be good news.
“ Well, it’s not great I’m afraid. We have looked over all your eggs and we came to the conclusion that none of them were viable. I’m really sorry” he told her in a soft voice. Kate froze. She couldn’t believe it. Her last resort at having her own child had just been shattered.
“ I know this was your last resort, but there is always adoption or even surrogacy with the use of Jethro’s sperm” the doctor told her. Kate shook her head.
“ That’s not an option. So there is no other way I can have my own children?” she asked in a very soft voice.
“ No, I am really sorry Kate. If there was something else I would suggest it but there isn’t. Once again I am really sorry” he told her.
“ Thank you” Kate said in a raspy voice before closing her phone. She crossed her arms over her chest. They had been trying for a year and that was their last chance. She couldn’t face him. It was all her fault. She couldn’t help it. Her legs gave way and she slip down to the ground, her knees pulled to her chest and she cried.
Gibbs and Tony were still at their desks. Gibbs had stopped working the moment Kate had left. He was so anxious to find out if he was going to be a father again and he knew how much it meant to Kate. He looked down at the time on his screen. She had been gone for 20 minutes now. He looked over to where she had gone. He couldn’t see her anymore.
‘ Where is she’ he thought. McGee then entered the squad room.
“ Where’s Kate?” he asked noticing her absence.
“ Phone call” Tony said, not looking up from his work. Gibbs looked over at McGee who smiled. They all knew about their trouble with conceiving, hell the whole building knew thanks to Abby. Gibbs turned his attention to where Kate had been, he noticed Chris Pachi coming this way with a very concerned looked on his face.
“ Gibbs” he said in a low voice as he reached his desk. Gibbs looked up.
“ It’s Kate. I think she got some bad news. She is hysterical back there” he said pointing to where he had found Kate on the floor. Gibbs got up from behind his desk and ran to where Kate was. He saw her sitting up and crying into her arms. He knelt down in front of her and put an arm on her shoulder.
“ Katie, what happened?” he asked in a low voice. She lifted her head up and he could see the hurt in her eyes and the tear marks that ran down her face.
“ They…were…no…good” she said through her sobs. Gibbs’ heart sank. He pulled Kate closer to him and she wrapped her arms around him and cried into his chest. He held onto her tight and kissed her head.
“ It’s ok. It’s going to be ok” he said a soothing voice. She had finally started to calm down. Gibbs held her to her feet and helped her fix her hair and wiped away the remaining tears.
“ I’ll take you home” he told her in a soft voice. She gave him a small nod. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and they walked back to the squad room and she slowly grabbed her things.
“ Kate are you ok?” McGee asked standing up from his chair. She looked over at him and saw the concern in his eyes. She gave him a weak smile.
“ I’ll be ok Tim” she said in a small voice. He just nodded not wanting to pry any more than what he had.
“ I’m sorry Kate” Tony said sympathetically. Kate turned around. She was surprised at his expression, she had never seen him look so down before.
“ It’s ok Tony” she told him.
“ Come on let’s go” Gibbs said snaking his arm around her waist and pulling her towards the elevators. Kate leaned into him for extra support.
Tony and McGee watched as the couple got on the elevator.
“ I can’t believe it” McGee said. Tony sighed and sat back down.
“ I guess it just wasn’t meant to be” he said and started on his work.
Kate and Gibbs had been together for almost four years now. They had both agreed that getting married was out of the question as they didn’t want to end something wonderful. Three years into their relationship they decided to start a family. After 8 months of trying they went to see a specialist who took samples of Gibbs’ sperm and Kate’s eggs. The problem was with Kate’s eggs, which surprised them as they thought it would have been Gibbs, him being older and all. They went through all they IVF treatments and this had been their last hope. Gibbs had thrown adoption in the air a couple of times but Kate wanted to carry their own baby to term. She wanted to experience what other mother’s had. But now her dreams of that were shattered.
5 months later.
It was training time. Tony was in the ring with McGee and Kate and Gibbs were going to do some hand-to-hand combat for a change. Gibbs was waiting by the mat while watching Tony and McGee. He couldn’t help but laugh at the two prancing around the ring. He looked at his watch. He knew Kate too her time to get ready, but 25 minutes. He let out a sigh and turned his attention back to the change rooms to see her coming towards him. She had a huge smile on her face and she was running towards him. She dodge the other agents until she finally reached him and threw herself at him. Her arms wrapping around his neck and her legs going around his waist. He stumbled back at the force of the impact and his hands went around her to hold her. She kissed him hard and passionately until he pulled away.
“ I thought I told you not at work” he said in a low voice. He could still see the smile on her face, and in her eyes.
“ I’m pregnant” she says happily. He looks at her confused.
“ What?” he asks in disbelief.
“ I’m pregnant Jet. That’s why I took so long” she told him. He tried to make his mouth work.
“ How?”.
“ I’m not sure but I’m two weeks late and the pee test I just did came back positive” she said trying to contain her excitement. By now McGee had noticed the two had stopped his fight with Tony, who two noticed the unusual behaviour.
“ What do you think it is about?” Tony asked McGee.
“ I don’t know”.
“ Boss?” Tony called out making Gibbs and Kate turn their heads in their direction. Kate still couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.
“ I’m pregnant” Kate called, answering Tony and McGee’s questioning faces. Gibbs loved those two words and couldn’t help but kiss her. Tony and McGee smiled at the now very happy couple. Kate unwrapped her legs from around his waist and stood. Gibbs pulled back to look at her.
“ Are you happy?” she asked in a soft tone, for only his ears. His smile widened.
“ I’m more than happy” he said as he ran his thumb over her cheek.
“ Good” she said letting him go.
“ What are you doing?” he asked as she stood onto the mat.
“ We have training to do” she said with a shrug. He shook his head.
“ Not you. You’re going back upstairs and taking it easy. I am taking no chances with this. We be as careful as possible” he told her with another kiss. She smiled and nodded.
“ Whatever you say” she said then hugged him again, this time he lifted her off the ground. She kissed him again then headed back to the change rooms. She was met by a heap of congratulations on the way, as was Gibbs when she left. The whole day he could not wipe the smile from his face.
