The next week went by fast. On Tuesday Gibbs picked up the turkey and
the fryer and the instructions on how to deep-fry it. They talked to
the team and had each person bring something to the meal on
Thursday.

Each day Jenny was to read a few pages if not more out loud. The
first time it was very frustrating for her, but Tony sat with her at
the kitchen table and helped her sound out the words. Tony didn't
lose his patience and just made Jenny take her time. By Wednesday she
was getting better with the words and sounding them out.

Gibbs grabbed Abby and they went shopping that Tuesday for a Leap
Frog and a few computer programs for reading and math. When they got
home Abby installed the programs on Jenny's computer. Jenny loved her
Leap Frog. Gibbs got her a few different cartridges as well.

Wednesday Gibbs was in the basement working on his boat and Tony was
in the kitchen working with Jenny on reading more of the Harry Potter
book. It was about 1300 when the doorbell rang.

"Be right back, Peanut." Tony got up and walked to the front door and
opened it to find Mr. Cline there.

"Mr. Cline, it's nice to see you."

The man's face was not a happy one. "Mr. DiNozzo, I'm sorry to say
I'm the bearer of bad news."

"Please, come in." Tony showed him into the living room.

He had his briefcase with him as he walked in. "Thank you, sir."

"Can I get you something to drink?"

"Please, water would be nice."

"Coming right up." Tony walked into the kitchen. "Sorry, Peanut. How
about you head up and play with your dolls or on your computer for a
while?"

"But I want to read more."

"Then how about you take the book up and read a little more. I have
to talk with Mr. Cline."

"Okay," Jenny said, taking the book and walking out.

"Hello, Mr. Cline."

"Jenny. How are you doing?"

"Great. Well, nice to see you again, sir," she said before running up
the stairs.

Seeing how happy she looked, Mr. Cline was even more unhappy with the
news he had to give the two men.

Tony came back a moment later with a bottle of water and handed it to
him. "Here you go. Now, what can we do for you?"

"Is Mr. Gibbs around?"

"Yeah, hold on, let me get him." Tony went to the top of the basement
stairs. "Baby, can you come up here for a moment?" he yelled down.

Without hesitation Gibbs was dusting himself off and walking up the
stairs. "What?"

"Mr. Cline is here in the living room. He needs to talk to both of
us."

Gibbs face went from a smile to the stone stare he was famous for as
he and Tony walked back to the living room.

When the men walked in Mr. cline stood up again.

"Please, have a seat," Gibbs said as he and Tony sat down on the love
seat; they didn't hold hands but they were sitting close to each
other.

"Gentlemen, I'm sorry to have to tell you this so close to the
holiday, especially since it looks like Jenny is adjusting to her new
home so well, but-"

"What's the matter?" Gibbs interrupted. "What's wrong?"

"Jethro, calm down. He's getting to it."

"Mr. DiNozzo-"

"Tony, please."

"Okay, Tony. Well, someone has come forward and is now contesting the
will of Monica for custody of Jenny."

"WHAT?" Tony yelled.

Gibbs placed his hand on Tony's leg. "Mr. Cline, what does this mean?"

"Well, Mr.-"

"Just Gibbs, please."

"Well, Gibbs, a man has come forward and is claiming to be Jenny's
biological father. He read the obituary in the papers and came
forward for the little girl, claiming he didn't even know she was
alive."

"He can't."

"I'm sorry, Tony, yes he can. We have a paternity test planned for
next week, but I felt the both of you should know that this might get
ugly. He expressed an interest, and let me quote this-" Mr. Cline
pulled out a notepad "-that two fags will not raise his daughter."

"So what does this mean?" Gibbs questioned tightly, keeping a level
head while Tony was up and pacing.

"Well, as long as you would like, we can still go ahead and make the
man contest the will, then it will be up to the court to see who is
the better parent."

"This can't be. It will kill her. She's just getting better with
being outside of our sight," Tony was saying under his breath.

"Well, I can say that it doesn't matter what happens," Gibbs
said. "We will fight for that little girl and make sure her mother's
wishes are carried out."

"I was hoping you would say that. We will, of course, gladly
represent you if you wish or you can obtain a lawyer of your own."

"Can we get back to you on this part?"

"Yes. Again, I'm sorry I had to be the bearer of bad news so close to
the holiday."

"Is there anyway we can get the name of the man?"

"I'm sorry, but at this point we can't release that information."

"I understand. Thank you for coming in person and letting us know."
Gibbs got up and shook the man's hand while showing him to the door.
Then he went back to his still-pacing lover.

Tony looked at him, eyes full of pain.

"Honey, relax."

"Jethro, how can he? I mean, this little girl had been through enough
upheaval. She's happy now and has a loving home."
"Honey," Gibbs said, grabbing his lover and embracing him.

Tony started to cry on Gibbs' shoulder. Gibbs let a tear of his own
fall.

Jenny had heard Tony yell and was listening to the whole conversation
at the top of the stairs. Gibbs heard her running back to her room,
crying.

"Okay, let's go up and let her know that she is not going anywhere as
long as we have a breath in our bodies."

"We can't. It's not true. What if the court-"

"Tony." Gibbs placed his hand on Tony's face and cupped it, then
moved in closer and kissed his lover, tongue asking for entrance to
Tony's mouth.

Tony fell into the kiss, his desperation showing. Gibbs eventually
pulled back a little.

"I have no intention of letting some other man raise this little
girl," he said. "She is ours. She's old enough to make up her own
mind. Can you see her leaving us right now? And where has this guy
been until now? Why hasn't he come forward before?"

"But-"

"No buts. We have a little girl up there that overheard our
conversation, and we need to be strong for her and let her know that
we plan on fighting to keep her."

Tony just looked at Gibbs. Gibbs wiped the tears from Tony's face,
and they both went upstairs to Jenny's room, holding hands.

"Peanut, you okay?" Tony asked, trying not to cry as well.

Tony sat on one side of the bed and Gibbs went to the other side of
the bed.

"They want to take me away from you," Jenny mumbled from her pillow
as Tony and Gibbs both rubbed her back.

"Honey, we want you to kwon that as long as we can, we will fight and
not let them take you from us. We said that awhile ago, and we still
mean it."

Jenny latched onto Tony and was crying in his lap. They couldn't do
anything but show her support. After awhile Jenny had cried herself
to sleep. Tony put her under the sheets and let her nap.

Tony and Gibbs left her in her room and went to the living room where
Tony broke down again.

"I think we should cancel tomorrow."

"No, not at all. We go along with it as scheduled."

"Why, Jethro?"

"Jenny needs to learn that things go on and our friends have a right
to know that life is about to get very hard for all of us. You know
they'll be called as character witnesses."

"Baby," Tony said, leaning on Gibbs, not crying anymore but holding
onto him for dear life.

After a while Tony fell asleep and his grip loosened. Gibbs was able
to snake out from underneath him and made a few calls. The first call
was to the psychiatrist, who said to do what Gibbs already knew, just
be there for the little girl and to not let her shut down. The next
call was to Abby to let her know what was going on and for her to
pass on the info to everyone else on the team.

Gibbs then walked into the kitchen and started dinner. They were
having spaghetti and meatballs. When it was done he walked into the
living room and was sitting on the floor next to Tony.

"Honey," he said, stroking Tony's face, "time to get up and eat
something."

"Um."

"Time to eat."

"Not hungry." Tony mumbled.

"Don't give me that bull. You are. I just heard your stomach rumble."

"I can't eat, Jethro."

"Humor me, okay? Please?"

Gibbs blue eyes met with Tony's hazel eyes, and Gibbs leaned in for a
kiss. The kiss was like the first time they'd kissed.

"I'm going to get Jenny and have her eat something. The doctor said
to not let her shut down."

"You called the doc already?"

"Yes, and also our friends. You can sleep through just about
anything."

Gibbs kissed the tip of his nose, got up and went to get Jenny. She
was lying on her bed, awake.

"Hey there, sunshine," Gibbs said after knocking and walking
in. "Time for dinner."

"I'm not hungry," she said listlessly.

"Nope, not buying it. Come on, honey, you need to eat. We missed
lunch."

"I don't feel good."

Gibbs walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. Jenny latched onto
him. He started to stroke her hair.

"Come on, honey, let's try to eat something, okay?"

"I really don't feel good."

"I know, but eating will help, and then we can take a nice hot bath,
and you can use your crayon soap thing you like so much."

Gibbs picked up the little girl who he thought was not so little
anymore and was getting heavy. He carried her down and placed her at
the kitchen table in the free chair. Tony had already put a little
spaghetti and a meatball on her plate and had also served a little
for himself. Gibbs made up his own plate.

Jenny just sat there, looking at them, then at the food.

"You don't want me anymore," she whispered.

Both Gibbs and Tony looked at the hurt little girl.

"Peanut, you know that's not true."

"But this person will take me away from you both, and you'll forget
about me."

"Honey, we will try not to let anyone ever take you, and no matter
what happens, we will never forget about you. You're too dear to Tony
and myself to let that happen."

Gibbs finished eating. Jenny ate a little, and Tony managed to eat
all the food in front of him, despite his protest of not being
hungry.

"Okay, how about that bath now, Peanut?" Tony said.

He helped her get up the stairs and into the bath, giving her the
soap crayons, but she didn't move, just sat there in the warm water.
Tony washed her hair, her back and her chest. He felt a little
uncomfortable washing below the waist, so he didn't worry about that.

After the dishes were cleaned up, Gibbs showed up in the bathroom. It
was not late, only about 1930, but Gibbs had Jenny's nightclothes
ready for her. He helped her out of the tub and helped her get
dressed while Tony took care of the water.

Then Gibbs did something Tony wasn't expecting; he put her in their
bed and tucked her in. Gibbs lay down with the girl, not in a pair of
boxers but in his clothing. Tony followed the man into bed, and Jenny
curled up into Tony and cried herself to sleep. Tony was strong only
because Gibbs had his fingers entwined with his.
